The purpose of Gordon-Rushville High School Counseling Program is to enhance and promote the learning process, and motivate all students to excel in all endeavors.
Counseling and guidance is an integral part of each school’s total education program. It provides important benefits to individual students by addressing their intellectual, emotional, social, and psychological needs. The counseling and guidance program at Gordon-Rushville High School includes activities designed to address the needs of all students by helping them acquire competencies in the domains of academic, career, and personal/social development.
Following both the ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs and the Nebraska School Counseling Guide, Gordon-Rushville High School promotes excellence through work in four program areas:
- Guidance Curriculum
The school guidance curriculum includes classroom and large group activities with the emphasis on decision-making; self-understanding; study skills; and career exploration, preparation, and planning.
- Individual Planning
This component of the comprehensive school counseling and guidance program includes counseling activities that provide every student with an opportunity to plan, monitor, and manage their academic, career, and personal/social development. Individual student planning emphasizes test interpretation, while academic counseling includes postsecondary education, career/technical education, and career planning.
- Responsive Services
These services include counseling or referral activities to meet the immediate needs and concerns of students. Responsive Services include personal counseling, problem solving, agency referral, and consultation.
- System Support
System Support includes indirect guidance management activities that maintain and enhance the total school counseling and guidance program. It includes program, staff, and school support activities and services. Responsibilities in this component include staff relations, community relations, task forces, professional development, support teams, test interpretation, data analysis, and curriculum development.
How can parents help?
Active parental involvement in the activities of the guidance and counseling program is essential if students are to make informed choices. Parents can assist by encouraging their children to do their best in school, by attending school functions and by helping their children understand that learning is important and is tied to career choices and career success. Parents are invited to contact their child’s school counselor with any questions, concerns, ideas, or requests for assistance.
