James Borton recently earned his ServSafe Food Handler Certificate from the National Restaurant Foundation. James is taking the second level ProStart class at Gordon-Rushville High School. Through this class, he has learned the safety guidelines of working in the foodservice industry. James learned information in the classroom and then completed the ServSafe Food Handler online training and testing. The test covers five sections: basic food safety, personal hygiene, cross-contamination and allergens, time and temperature guidelines, and cleaning and sanitation. This certificate may be required by employers in the industry to ensure that their employees understand and follow food safety in the workplace. James commented that “the test was fairly easy because it was what we have learned in the classroom and what we practice in our cooking labs.”

Mrs. Kruger teaches the ProStart curriculum from the National Restaurant Foundation in order to help students prepare for careers in the food industry. She is a certified ServSafe instructor and proctor and allows students the opportunity to complete the ServSafe training and certification if they desire to do so. Mrs. Kruger commented that “James is interested in a career in the foodservice industry and this was a great opportunity for him to show to future employers his understanding and commitment to food safety. I had no doubt that he would pass the test on his first attempt. I am proud of his achievement.”
